I wanted to join an organization that I felt was in the community, rather than a corporation that is trying to fulfill needs but without caring. I met Jen at a birth workers meet and greet. She was such a warm and funny person. She is very energetic and in that way she is like me. I wanted to learn more about being a doula. I saw how knowledgeable she is and I wanted to train under someone highly qualified.
Doula philosophy and approach:
I believe that doulas, first and foremost, should be motivators. I am someone who values being a cheerleader and helping clients feel empowered. I want my clients to feel like ‘you are capable, you are knowledgeable, you are powerful. You have everything you need inside you to take on birth and bring your baby into this world. I also feel that birthing people should have options to give birth however they choose. I understand there are factors that are out of control, that may affect birthing progress, but I stand by clients choices. It is not my place to dictate how a client should birth. The worl places values on how birth should be, which may not be based on evidence. Birth is not something that should be handled with a medical disease model, it is a natural process and has been happening since the beginning of time. I want clients to have their baby in teh way they want to have their baby. As a doula I want to stand by clients as they embrace their power through their transitions of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
